We took a ferry to the South Island (6 hours total) then drove 2.5 hours. Nice views on the ferry ride and now looking forward to exploring the South Island.
Started the day at a cute little cafe in Havelock North and a stroll through town. After that we hit the road to Wellington. FYI, construction on highway 2 in case you are coming this way anytime soon. Check out the signage to warn you of upcoming construction. We used quite a few explanatory words when we saw the signage. Got a special treat when we got to Wellington. They were hosting Dragon boat racing competitions in the harbor. Josh T. Did you race in these? Great walk along the waterfront to end the evening.
First rainy day, so we made the most of it by visiting three wineries, all were excellent and put us in good frame of mind. Rain cleared and we were able to get a great hike in at Te Mata Peak. Tonight’s motel sits among an apple orchard and they gave us permission to jump the fence and pick a few.🍎
Hiked to a few waterfalls in the National Park with views of volcano’s. The one posted here was Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings for all of you Hobbit nerds. Ended the day with a splendid sail on Lake Taupo to see a Māori carving. Met lovely people on the boat.
Had a wonderful hike at Huka Falls, the color of the water was unbelievable and so clear. After the hike we soaked our feet at the Hot Water Beach on Lake Taupo and ended the night with lovely sunset.
Started the day at Waitomo Glowworms Cave, couldn’t take pics in the cave, but it was pretty cool. Our next adventure was a treetop hike among the Redwoods, 22 suspension bridges in all, followed that with a hike through the same on the forest floor, last adventure for the day was a geothermal park, Hell’s Gate.
Today’s adventures took us on a very winding road for 35 miles up and over beautiful mountains to the Coramandel Peninsula. We hiked to Cathedral Cove with stunning views!! Headed inland so no more beaches for a while.
